I mean, it's made clear that Jean-Baptiste is killing people, but neither the book nor the movie deal much with the murders themselves. The story is more about Jean-Baptiste himself, and the motives *behind* the murders. It's one of the few books that's ever affected me physically (that is, I'd finish a chapter and have to set the book down because I was shaking). Then again, that could just be me. ;)
